February 11, 2013

Dear Friends,

It is providential, I think that as we begin our observance of the Season of Lent on Wednesday of this week that our reading from Exodus narrates the idolatry and sin of the Children of Israel as they turn their backs on God, create and worship a golden calf.  This idolatrous act incites the wrath of both God and Moses, but in the end, God's grace abounds as he once again proclaims the Israelites as his covenant children.  In Matthew, we will read of the crucifixion of Jesus, the glory of his resurrection from the dead and his ascension into heaven at which time he issued what the Christian tradition has labeled the "Great Commission."  Our reading from the Psalms invites praise and celebration for God's presence as well as prayers for deliverance from our enemies.  In Proverbs, we are invited to seek the wisdom of the Lord.

As we move into the Season of Lent, perhaps our reading through the Bible can become a central aspect of our Lenten discipline.

Grace and peace to you as we continue this journey together,

Tom Lovell
